MU216.2: Hymnology 2 credit hours

The student is introduced to an overview of western art musical development from Bible times to the present. Music philosophies, mainline composers, and major works are highlighted.

MU221.1: Piano Class II 1 credit hour

Beginning techniques are covered, including understanding and practical application of music fundamentals as applied to the keyboard. A progressive competency in basic four part hymnplaying, major and minor scales and chords, and easy classical pieces is required. The student may be placed in MU 131.1, 132.1, 231.1, 232.1, 331.1, 332.1, 431.1, or 432.1, depending on his progress and development.

MU101.1: Voice Class I 1 credit hour

Basic instruction is given on breathing coordination, correct vowel pronunciation, and consonant articulation. In addition, platform decorum, dress, and ministry will be practiced through the use of the gospel song solo. The student may be placed in MU 141.1, 142.1, 241.1, 242.1, 341.1, 342.1, 441.1, or 442.1, depending on his progress and development.

Private or semi-private instruction is given to each student to develop proper piano technique, practice procedures, and musicality for the performing of classical compositions, gospel song and hymn arrangements, and to learn the basic fundamentals of congregational hymnplaying.

MU104.2: Fundamentals of Music 2 credit hours

A course designed to introduce the student to the basic fundamental mechanics of music. Through the knowledge gained and the appreciation fostered, the student can enjoy music by participating to one degree or another in that art. This course is also offered to those students who wish to enter the music major program but whose skills are not sufficient to take MU 111.3. Hours do not count toward graduation.

MU232.1: Piano Lessons 1 credit hour

Private or semi-private instruction is given to each student to develop proper piano technique, practice procedures, and musicality for the performing of classical compositions, gospel song and hymn arrangements, and to learn the basic fundamentals of congregational hymnplaying.

MU241.1: Voice Lessons 1 credit hour

Private instruction is given to each student in developing a proper and dependable technique. The student can apply this in the singing of the basic art song and sacred art song literature, as well as applicable literature from oratorio. The ministry of the gospel-song solo is also an important part of this instruction.

MU111.3: Music Theory I 3 credit hours

Basic ear training, sight singing, and keyboard and written harmony covering the major/minor key system. The student progresses from scales through all intervals, triads, inversions, harmonic progressions, and analyses. Prerequisite: MU 104.2 or successful completion of a qualifying entrance exam showing sufficient skills in music to enable the student to handle the level of competency demanded by this course.
